The first thing every CAT aspirant is told is that it is an exam of glorious uncertainties and if something has to go wrong it definitely will. This time around, an additional lesson was learnt: disregard the above only at your own risk. Here's my story. I had prepared myself for every eleventh hour crisis imaginable. Maybe there'd be no electricity at the test centre. (If your house is infested with flies and mosquitoes, preparing for this one is simple.) Or the only broken desk and chair in the hall would come to me. (Ergo, I took some practice tests sitting on my grandfather's broken chair, balanced precariously on three and a half legs). Or there'd be at least one marriage procession, political rally, or religious protest march passing by the test centre at exactly the same time I was grappling with that final all-important Math problem that I needed to crack to make the cut off. (How does one plan for that? Take practice tests listening to your favourite Led Zeppelin number. Enough to pump anyone up!) Cut to 21 November 2004. D-Day. One had to see the crowd outside the centre to believe it. Almost everyone had brought his or her extended family along. I say almost everyone as yours truly had made the long arduous journey alone using not one, not two, but three forms of transport! I managed to find my desk without mishaps. And the chair wasn't broken. To top it, the number of questions was down to 123 from 150 earlier. But that was where the good news ended. The moment the paper was distributed, it became clear that this year's CAT marked a major departure from previous years. The twist came in the differential weightage the questions carried. Unlike in the past, when all questions carried same marks, now I was confronted by 2, 1 and ½ mark questions. Immediately all well thought-out test strategies were thrown out of the window. No problem. Or so I thought. All I had to do was pick out the easy questions, maintain a decent accuracy rate and I'd be through. Starting with the English section, I raced through grammar and the reading passages. Then came the two-mark questions which were distinctly tougher and almost unsolvable given the time constraint. In the Data Interpretation section, things simply began to fall apart. All the one-mark questions had some twist in them and took a fair bit of time to understand. Given their level of complexity, two marks for each question would've been more suitable. The actual two-mark questions were bouncers of the Waqar Younis variety. I sincerely feel that there should've been a disclaimer somewhere in the paper saying: Solve any of these unsolvable questions and you'll be in. With no such offer, the only prudent thing to do was to move on. But by now I had just half an hour left with a hope quotient touching sub-zero and the Math section still left to navigate. Throwing caution to the winds, I began doing what coaching institutes suggest one to do to boost an already decent score. Intelligent guessing! (Except, I was doing it as a last option). This section turned out to be a mixed bag. At first, it looked easy. But as one progressed, it became clear that the paper setters had worded the questions simply but made them calculation intensive. Not a double whammy like the previous section, but certainly not a cakewalk. Finally, the two hours got over in what seemed like two minutes and I was left with an abysmally low number of attempts. It was obvious that this year's CAT would be remembered not only as the toughest in history but also the trickiest. I took consolation in the shell-shocked faces around me. All was not lost! Outside, an industrious vendor was attracting a huge crowd. No prizes for guessing what he was selling. Handkerchiefs! (The author was a one-time serious CAT aspirant and now has no plans of taking the exam again. His CAT score will probably be equal to the temperature in Srinagar yesterday!) ================= Encouraging, isnt it? ;-) All in God's hands... |
